1943: The Battle of Midway is a classic arcade shoot-’em-up released by Capcom in 1987. It’s actually a sequel to the earlier game, 1942, and both are set during World War II, with a heavy dose of video game imagination layered over the history.
In 1943, you pilot a P-38 Lightning fighter plane, taking on wave after wave of enemy aircraft and naval vessels in the Pacific Theater, specifically during the Battle of Midway. The gameplay is top-down and vertically scrolling — think of it as a “bullet hell” before that term really existed. You dodge enemy fire, collect power-ups, and unleash special attacks like lightning strikes and screen-clearing bombs.
One of the things that set 1943 apart was its energy meter. Rather than dying in one hit, you have a health bar that drains both over time and when you take damage. This means you’re constantly racing against the clock, searching for health-restoring items as you blast through stages filled with boss battles against massive battleships and squadrons of planes.
The graphics were bright and detailed for the era, and the music had that unmistakable late-’80s Capcom vibe. 1943 was hugely popular in arcades and has since been ported to tons of platforms — NES, various Capcom collections, and more. It’s remembered as one of the defining shoot-’em-ups of its generation, with tight controls and a surprisingly strategic edge for such a frantic game.
